Thessaloniki history

May 12, 2008

Thessaloniki is a historic city in Greece and the Balkans. In the long historical course was found in possession of various peoples and has been a place of cultural convergence of many ethnicities. Between 1912 and the end of the First Balkan War Thessaloniki is the second largest city of the modern Greek state and today is the largest city and capital of Macedonia region of Central Macedonia, with a population of 900,000 inhabitants .

The establishment coincides with the beginning of the Hellenistic era, the assumption that universal empire of Alexander the Great from the successors and the sovereignty of the Greek culture in most of the known, for the then Western world. The heir of the kingdom of Macedonia and husband of the step sister of Alexander, Cassander, founded the city together with other smaller towns around the Thermaic Gulf, and gave the name of his wife, daughter of Philip II, Thessaloniki.

In the 2 century BC the city went under the Roman rule like the rest of Greece and the Hellenistic Asia Minor territories, and was originally one of the four seats of administration of the provinces of Macedonia and later became the capital of the Roman province of Macedonia. In the beginning of the transition from the Roman Empire in the Christian Empire of the East by transferring the capital from Constantine the Great to the East, was due to important strategic position, one of the candidate cities, which were proposed as substitutes of Rome. Despite that, however, Byzantium was preferred as the new capital city, Thessaloniki had political and cultural role as well.

Getting to Athens Greece

February 15, 2008

Throughout the year millions of visitors travel to Athens. For the majority, the best way to arrive is by air but there are, or course, the alternative routes by train, car or ferry boats which leave from various Italian ports. (Venice, Ancona, Bari and Brindisi).
The following articles contain useful information and tips about getting to Athens Greece.

BY AIR

Athens airport information

The new Athens airport located  near to Athens and is considered as one of the best  in Europe. It serves hundreds of flights to Greece daily from all international airlines ,Its modern design enables you to find your way around easily. there are plenty of shops, restaurants and bars, internet access and, in fact, everything that the business or tourist travelers need in order to feel comfortable. Taxis and buses for the city of Athens are exactly outside the airport and the bus journey is cheap and takes only between 40 and 45 minutes to the center at Syntagma Square. If your plan, on arriving at the airport, is to take a boat to one of the islands, you can take a bus from the airport down to the Port of Piraeus, a journey of about one hour. The brand new Attica Highway (Attiki odos )makes easy the transport to and from the Athens international Airport if you are considering hiring a car to drive from the airport into the city there are two alternative routes that you can take. The best way is via the new Attica highway. Alternatively, especially if you are going to stay on the coastline suburbs of Athens in places such as, Glifada, Voula, Vouliagmeni, Kavouri and Varkisa, the preferred route would be to take the road to Vari which leads to the Voula junction. To get to Glyfada go straight but dont take the right lane that will take you to Vouliagmenis Avenue ,it will take you though in the center of Athens, instead keep on the Karamanlis Av. and then to Poseidonos Av.that leads to Glyfada ,Faliro and Piraeus in that area you can find some of the most organised Greek beaches. To Get to Vouliagmeni,Kavouri,Varkiza and all the west coast up to Sounion better go until you find a U turn or a possible way to turn back to the Poseidonos Avenue in the opposite direction towards Voula and Sounion.

BY TRAIN
Nowadays, unlike in the 1970s, most travelers don’t use trains to come to Greece . But this is a wonderful way to arrive and should be savored by all lovers of train travel. For anyone coming from the European continent the best way is via Italy and then by Ferries to Patras. For all western European travelers who start the journey from Paris ,trains to Milan departure at night from the station Paris Bercy  just a few minutes away from the station Gare de Lion ,it is important to know that you need reservation, especially if you travel at night (Check for Artesia trains Paris Milan ).The day journey is a few hours shorter and trains to Milan depart from Gare de Lyon. Alternatively you can take the train via Swizerland Basel or Lausanne for Italy (Milan-Ancona) more info you will find at the official site of France rails www.sncf.com and Italy at www.trenitalia.com. On arrival at Patras, the journey to Athens is easily done by bus or train. Strangely enough, the journey by bus is quicker than that by train, taking approximately 2.5 hours whereas the latter can take up to 4 hours! Buses to Athens from Patras depart every 30 minutes whereas the trains are less frequent. The main bus terminal at Patras is just outside the port entrance.

BY CAR

If you are coming from the European continent to Greece you need to head towards Italy and the Italian ports of either Ancona, Venice Bari or Brindisi where the daily connections to Corfu Igumenitsa and Patras can be found. The journey from Venice is less favourable for car drivers as it is expensive and long at 36 hours. Ancona is the ideal departure port, taking between 18-20 hours to Patras and approximately 12 hours to Corfu or Igoumenitsa.Obviously, highway routes depend upon from which European country your journey began. From the UK , London , Manchester ,and all other British cities via Dover or Folkstone -Calais head towards Paris and then take the A6 road towards Lyon. From Lyon take the A43 towards Aix-Les-Bain, and then the A41 to Chamonix. At Chamonix, take the E21B road towards Aosta where you must pick up the A5 and turn at the junction of the A4 towards Milan. Before Milan turn off the A4 onto the A1 towards Bologna. Just before Bologna take the A14 straight to Ancona If you intend to go to Greece from the ports of Bari or Brindisi then keep on the A14 to the South of Italy. For visitors from the Benelux countries, you should take the E4 which goes through Koln, Stutgard, Karlsruhe and Basel on the Swiss borders. From Basel take the E9 to Luzerne(Lucerne) and straight down through the Saint Gothard Pass and on towards Lugano and Como where the E9 becomes the A9 to Milan. the route from Milan is then as above from the UK.Travelers from Scandinavia or North Germany can head towards Hamburg and pick up the A7 towards Kassell and Munich. From Munich head towards the Austrian/German borders on the E11. Before Rosenhein turn to the E86 for Kufstein. The E86 becomes the A12 which goes towards Innsbruck. From Innsbruck take the A13 to Brenner, where you continue on the Italian A22 straight down to Mantova and Bologna. From Bologna take the same routes as mentioned previously if beginning your journey from the UK. During the Greek Christmas periode you must drive very carefully in Greece because of the weather conditions and due to the fact that many Greeks are spending their holidays in many areas of the Greek mainland

Kos package holidays

February 11, 2008

Tourism is a major source of income for Kos island. The tourist industry had as a result the build of many hotels in Kos especially in Kos town and Kardamena. Unfortunatelly the package tourism that stay in those hotels is called the braselet tourism and it brings nothing to the tourist industry of Kos as they have free access within their hotels for food and drinks, plus within the huge hotel complexes there are all kind of entertainment like bars, discos, taverns etch and all with very low prices, as a result the many labour class tourists will spend one or 2 weeks in Kos spending 90% of their times in their golden cages. The tourist business people of Kos are really worried about this situation the so called Bracelet Tourism from the fact that all tourist that stay those big hotel complexes wearing a Bracelet to be recognised and to have free access to all free services and activities that are included in the package. In other words the worst kind of tourism and is not only Kos the same system occurs all major tourist resorts in Spain, like Majorca, Ibiza, Malaga, and other Greek islands like Rhodes or Corfu.

But apart of that Kos is one of the most popular Greek islands in the Aegean Sea part of the Dodecanese islands, Kos is the third largest island of the Dodecanese after Rhodes and Karpathos. The island situated near to the Asia minor coast, northwest of Rhodes and southeast of Nisyros. There are many ferries that connect Kos and other Greek islands like Nisyros, Tilos, Symi, Patmos, Leros, Lipsi and Kalymnos. The island is about 60 miles by 12 miles wide. Kos consists of many fertile plains and mountains.

On Kos there are several monuments from the times of Hippocrates, who according the Greek Mythology his teacher was Asklepios. Famous is the tree of Hippocrates in the same capital Kos. There is also a Hippocrates museum dedicated to him. There are also several archaeological sites in or near the city, including a Roman amphitheatre and a gymnasium. The capital of Kos is the tourist and cultural centre of the island. Close to the port it is a 14th century castle, which was build in 1315 by the Knights of St. John of Rhodes. In the centre of Kos Town is an old marketplace, the agora. The island was inhabited from the prehistoric times by the Carians and during the historic period by the Dorians. In the 7-6th century. BC, Kos along with the cities Knidos, Halicarnassus, Ialysos, Kamiros and Lindos, was the Doric exapolis (six cities). In 500 BC Kos conquerd by the Persians, and was liberated in 479 BC. Kos  became a member of the City of Athens Greece. Kos had a great development in the 4 th century. BC Particularly after the establishment of the new town of Kos 4th century BC.
Alexander the Great in 4th century BC conquered the island. Kos during the Roman Empire declined but has seen new peak during the Byzantine history . It was again occupied by the Saracens, the Genovese, the Venetians and the Knights of St. John. In 1522 Kos was conquered by the Turks and in 1912 by the Italians. On 3 October 1943  during the world war 2 captured by the Germans and finally unified with Greece in 1948 .

Some of the larger sites on the island include Kos town, Kefalos, Kardamena, Antimachia, Mastihari, Marmari, Tigaki, Lambi  and Pyli. Smaller places are Zia, Zipari, Platani, Lagoudi and Asfendiou. The island has an international airport where many scheduled and charter flights arrive. Kos is a very suitable area for both young and old tourists. The Kos beaches  in comparison with many other Greek beaches are excellent. Kos also has a vibrant nightlife. The Big Bar street is the place to be during the summer months, though this or for the younger tourists.

A journey to Skiathos

February 5, 2008

With more than 60 wonderful beaches , Skiathos is an island with a rich vegetation. The beach of Koukounaries often considered one of the most beautiful Greek beaches .
Apart from Koukounaries the visitor can enjoy swimming on Ahladies and Kechries. It is interesting to see the castle, and the monasteries of Kounistra and Evangelistria. Do not forget to visit the home of Papadiamantis
Skiathos  is one of the most beautiful islands of  Greece and the dream beaches are decorating the tourist guides internationally together with the green inland. Spectacular landscapes compare to the poor vegetation of the  neighbouring Cyclades. But what the Cyclades, and many of the Dodecanese islands kept namely the architecture of the their settlements and their integration with the landscape, it is absent from Skiathos. Old and new residents, have destroyed the element which connects with tradition, embarked on unregulated construction activity, like the one , which we can see in most cities of Greece. The island character disappearing and the uniformity beast takes its place in this picturesque island, that many Greeks get to know through the pages of Alexandros Papadiamantis a giant of the Greek literature. The famous today Koukounaries, during  the era of the great author from Skiathos was little more than a point on the map that they saw it from a distance those who made a tour of the island and at the Castle wasn’t reachable except from determined pilgrims and tough farmers.
But Skiathos, like most islands, is not for winter visitors. Hardly you will find a hotel with heating, Breakfast is not served as an unnecessary luxury and restaurants have put padlocks waiting the Easter. An island where during the summer hosts thousands of tourists from the depths of the Earth, is not acceptable in the so-called dead period not to maintaining some kind of entertainment and consequently many of its permanent residents are fleeing for winter holidays or for additional employment in the urban centres. This place half the time is bursting with life, while the other half becomes    desert and abandoned. But after all the winter is only a few months and when the spring comes Skiathos is ready to host its visitors.
